
About Us
The Central Library of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Gorakhpur University was instituted in the very first year of establishment of the university. This library building is set up in about four thousand square meters area where approximately four lakhs of text material is stored. It works for the services of more than fifteen thousand students of the five faculties of the University, teachers, employees and researchers coming here for their research work.
There is a main text book collection room CTBS (Central Text Book Section) in this building from where the text books are distributed to the students of UG and PG level. The Nehru Hall or the reading room is located on the ground floor, in which the students read newspapers, magazines and various general books. Apart from this, there is also a Stack section on the ground floor envisaged for teachers and research scholars. There is a huge reference room on the first floor which is also known as Gandhi Hall. Excellent reference books like dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Directories, Bibliographies, Year-Books, Almanacs, Gazetteers, guide-books, maps, atlases, Handbooks, manuals and statistical sources etc are placed here. There is also a research Journal Section on this floor. Internet-equipped computers for teachers and researchers and special Braille enabled computers have also been installed for visually impaired people in the library. Famous historian Prof. G. C. Pandey was the first Honorary Librarian. In the span of almost seven decades many Professors have immensely contributed to the library. Since last one year, this library is moving on the path of progressive development in the efficient direction and leadership of Prof. Vinay Kumar Singh, Professor, Department of Zoology. The library is not just a collection/ store of books but inherent in it is the responsibility to ensure the continuous flow of knowledge, thoughts and it's contemplation. With this as an obligation and imperative duty , a dialogue room has also been established in the Library in which lectures and discussion are organized often. There are two excellent oil-paintings, of Gandhi ji and Nehru ji, which were created by Renowned Painter Dr. D. P. Dhulia, former HOD of Fine Arts Department. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of both the great personalities Library organize programs every year. Keeping in pace with the ever changing times and needs, efforts are being made to modernize the library to live up to the conti nuous changing roles of the libraries. With the incessant efforts of the honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Vijay Krishna Singh, for the first time special budgetary provisions have been made for e-content. Library automation process has been completed and now the departmental libraries are in the queue of automation. A well equipped Cyber Library is also being established for the teachers and researchers. To ensure the availability of books to the teachers as well as students on their personal computers and mobile phones the Remote Access facility has been provided on university website. For better monitoring and management CCTV cameras have been installed in important sections of the Library. Other works of development and restoration are in progress and basic amenities including new toilets, Parking Space for the staff and other necessary facilities are also underway.
