About Department

The Faculty of Law is a premier institution in the eastern part of the State of Uttar Pradesh. It has good and well furnished essential infrastructure necessary for imparting legal education with distinction. The entrance door of the ‘Faculty Building’ gives the glimpse of the famous inscription on the entry point of the Apex Court of the country derived from the famous utterance of Gandhari of Mahabharata ‘Yato Dharmastato Jayah’ which means “where there is righteousness, there is victory”.
The Department of Law was established after a year of the inauguration of the Gorakhpur University (as it was known at that time) in 1957. It started in 1958 with its founding Head Sri Prashiddh Narain Mishra, a reputed advocate of District Gorakhpur. The department has developed over a long period of time under the guidance and leadership of several learned academicians and legal luminaries such as Prof. R. B. Tiwari, Prof. U. R. Rai, Prof. O.P. Tiwari, Prof. Anirudh Prasad, Prof. G. S. Tiwari, Prof. Amarendra Kumar Mishra, Prof. ArvindKumar Mishra, Prof. Jitendra Tiwari, Prof. R. K. Pathak, Prof. Jitendra Mishra and Prof. Chandrashekhar (All previous Heads and Deans). Presently, Prof. Chandrashekhar is working as the founder Vice-Chancellor of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University at Aligarh (U.P.). At present, Prof. Ahmad Naseem is working as the Head and Dean of the Department/Faculty of Law. Besides the aforementioned learned academicians, several other erudite scholars have played their significant role in shaping the Department of Law such as Prof. R. C. Srivastava, Prof. T. P. Tripathi, Prof. D. N. Mishra, Prof. S. K. Tripathi, Prof. K. P. Pandey, Prof. R. N. Chaudhary etc. The Department has the distinction of having produced a fairly large number Civil Judges, Civil Servants, Academicians, Judges of High Courts and Vice Chancellors.

The Department is striving to serve the region and the country and desires to continue its endeavor in building the nation.
