The Department of Commerce has had the privilege of being one of the six departments which were initially started with the establishment of the University of Gorakhpur in 1957. Teaching at PG level only could start with the help of 04 faculty members- Dr. PK. Dwivedi. Dr A.P. Baijal. Dr. PN. Singh and Dr. Mithleshwar Singh headed by Dr. A.B. Mishra. Following the merger of the erstwhile MP Degree College in July, 1958 the strength of the faculty members increased and classes of both UG and PG were started from the academic session 1958-59. Dr. A.B. Mishra had been the first Head of the Department from 1957 to 1962. In November 1962, Dr. R.L. Agrawal took over as the first Professor and Head of the Department and as a result of his keen interest and continued efforts: the department diversified its activities in 1965 by starting three-year part-time PG Diploma in Business Management in June, 1975, Prof. A.P. Baijal took over charge of Head of the Department. Under his dynamic leadership bearing the acumen of a specialist, the Department emerged as one of the largest departments of the University increasing the faculty members to 23, imparting teaching and research facilities to a vast number of students. In the year 1989 the PG building of the department was constructed and in February 1989 XIX Joint-Annual conference of the Indian Association for Management Development and Inter-University Council for Business Education was organized. Prof. D.P. Agraval took over as Head of the Department in 1995. During his tenure, the department started long awaited M.B.A. Programme under the self-finance scheme which was recognized as a separate department in the year 2004 and since then its running successfully from October 2022 its been shifted to a newly constituted Faculty of Management. During the last three decades, the department achieved newer heights under the Headship of Prof. S.N. Chaturvedi, Prof. I.A. Ansari, Prof. T.PN. Srivastava, Prof. M.C. Gupta, Prof. Gopinath, Prof. A. K Tiwari, Prof Vinay Kumar Pandey, Prof.A Sen Gupta. Presently, the Department is headed by Prof. Shrivardhan Pathak , under his dynamic leadership the Department is making rapid strides. His commitment for academic pursuits have motivated the faculty members to channelize their efforts in organizing seminar, conferences, workshops in the department so that the students and scholars have an opportunity to interact with distinguished faculty members from different parts of the country. He is assisted by highly qualified and dynamic faculty members viz; Prof. Ravi Pratap Singh, Prof. Sanjay Baijal, Prof. Ajeya Kumar Gupta, Prof. Ashish Kumar Srivastava, Prof. Sanjeet Kumar Gupta, Prof. Rajeev Prabhakar, Prof Anil Kumar Yadav, Prof. Manish Kumar Srivastva Dr. Pratima Jaiswal, Dr Harshdev Verma, Dr. Anshu Gupta, Dr. Maneesh Kumar, Dr. Suman Kannoujia , Dr. Pradeep Kumar, and Dr Rahul Mishra all having decades of teaching and research experience,. The department has specialized faculty members in all of the areas of Finance, Marketing, Business Taxation, Human Resource Management, Research Methodology.
The faculty members of the department are actively engaged in advanced researches in the field of Commerce and Management and have presented their research papers and articles in various National/ International Seminars and Conferences. The faculty members of the department have presented above 380 research papers/ articles in various national and international seminars/ conferences and above 450 papers have been published in various journals of repute. The members of the department are occupying various key positions in the corporate life of the University and are contributing substantially in the achievement of the mission of the university. The department has successfully organized Four National Seminars and Eight Refresher Courses for University and College teachers, till now. The department has also restructured the UG and PG courses in accordance with the UGC guidelines under New Education policy and has introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at UG level along with PG semester system, revising its course structure thoroughly. The department has started B. Com (Banking & Insurance) in the self-finance mode since 2021. The tough and testing time of Covid pandemic in 2019-21 could not deter the faculty members from performing their duties, all the classes were regularly conducted through virtual platform to the satisfaction of students. On July 2, 2021, the Department organised its first *International Alumni Meet' with the wide participation of alumni throughout the world. A workshop on Research Methodology (virtual mode) was also organised from July 4-10, 2021. At present more than 70 students are registered as research scholars in the department including Junior Research Fellows and Senior Research Fellow. It is also worth mentioning that several students of the Department have qualified the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) in 2020-21.
