The Department of Ancient History, Archaeology & Culture came into existence with the establishment of the University of Gorakhpur in 1957.

Srivastava, Prof. P.S Chaturvedi, Prof. Gorakh Nath, Prof. Vipula Dubey, Prof. Rajawant Rao, Prof.Shitla Prasad Singh. Headed the department successfully. The department at present is busy pursuing academic activities under the leadership of Prof.Digvijay Nath.
The Department has an ideal location. It provides a serene atmosphere to the students. The congenial atmosphere impels the students to identify themselves with the department.
It is one of the few departments of the University, which have a library and reading room for the benefit of undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars.
Since 1981-82 the department has established a museum to exhibit antiquities found in excavation and explanation. A collection of photographs, casts of coins and sculptures, stamp ages, etc. in the museum helps the student of archaeology, numismatics, art, and iconography, etc.
The department enjoys the distinction of hosting several conferences, seminars, and workshops. The site of Sohagaura was excavated in 1962-63 and 1974 by the department. Liburise the excavation at Fazilnagar several the existence of a unique statement which has been identified as Agrahara in 1996.
The department has distinguished itself as an important centre of higher research. More than 200 candidates have obtained their Ph.D. degrees. A postgraduate diploma in archaeology and museology is also introduced to increase the scope of the department. As per NAAC guidelines, the undergraduate and postgraduate courses have been upgraded to meet the academic requirements of the day.
