Facultyof Law is a premier institution in the eastern part of the State of UttarPradesh. It has good and well furnished essential infrastructure necessary forimparting legal education with distinction. The entrance door of the ‘FacultyBuilding’ gives the glimpse of the famous inscription on the entry point of theApex Court of the country derived from the famous utterance of Gandhariof Mahabharata ‘Yato Dharmastato Jayah’ (Where there isrighteousness, there is victory).
TheDepartment of Law was established after a year of the inauguration of theGorakhpur University (as it was known at that time) in 1957. It started in 1958with its founding Head Sri Prashiddh Narain Mishra, a reputed advocate ofDistrict Gorakhpur. Sri Mishra headed the department for a little more than twoyears i.e. from 1958 to 1960. The Department of Law got its first full-fledgedProfessor and Head in 1962 with the honour of having Prof. (Dr.) R. B. Tewariwho had the distinction of having got the degree of Doctor in Juridical Sciencefrom the Yale Law School, United States of America and being the JSD student ofgreat legal scholar Prof. Mc Dougal. Prof. Tewari, during his tenure, startedPost-Graduate (LL.M.) classes from the academic session 1963-1964 andthereafter Post-Graduate Diploma in Labour Law was also started. Dr. Tewari’speriod started with great hope in the field of law. This period witnessed, asstated earlier, starting of LL.M. classes and P.G. Diploma in Labour Law. Italso witnessed enrollment of Ph.D. students pursuing research in Law.
