About the department
TheDepartment of Ancient History, Archaeology & Culture came in toexistence with the establishment of the University of Gorakhpur in 1957.
Prof. G.C. Pandey, Prof. V.S.Pathak, Prof. D.N. Tripathi, Prof. S.N. Chaturvedi, Prof. V.B. Rao, Prof. M.P.Tripathi, Prof. S.N. Srivastava, Prof. P.S Chaturvedi, Prof. Gorakh Nath, Prof. Vipula Dubey, Prof. Rajawant Rao, Prof.Shitla Prasad Singh. Headed the department successfully. The department atpresent is busy in pursuing academic activities under the leadership of Prof.Digvijay Nath.
The Department has an ideallocation. It provides a serene atmosphere to the students. The congenialatmosphere impels the students to identify blemselves with the department.
It is one of the few departments ofthe University, which have a library and reading room for the benefit ofundergraduate and post graduate students and research scholars.
Since 1981-82 the department hasestablished a museum to exhibit antiquities found in excavation andexplanation. A collection of photographs, casts of coins and sculpture,stampages etc in the museum help the student of archaeology, numismatics, artand iconography etc.
The department enjoys thedistinction of hosting several conferences, seminars and workshops. The site ofsohagaura was excavated in 1962-63 and 1974 by the department. Liburise theexcavation at Fazilnagar several the exestence of a unique statement which hasbeen identified as agrahara in 1996.
Thedepartment has distinguished itself as an important centre of higher research.More than 200 candidates have obtained there P-h.D degree. Post graduatediploma in archaeology and museology in also introduce to increase the scope ofthe department. As per NAAC guideline, the undergraduate and post graduatecourses have upgraded to meet the academic requirements of the day.
